What Is a Chemical Peel?

If you want to improve your skin but don’t want to do anything too invasive, a chemical peel can help treat some of the most stubborn skin conditions and beautify your complexion. This treatment is fully customizable and delivers some dramatic results. At Novo Med Spa in Frisco, TX, we are proud to offer different types of chemical peels to help address all of your skin concerns.

What Is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a treatment that uses a chemical solution to chemically exfoliate the skin. Peels contain a combination of acids, including glycolic, salicylic, lactic, and trichloroacetic acids. Once applied to the skin, they dissolve the top layer to reveal a younger, fresher, and brighter layer of skin below.

The Different Types of Chemical Peels

At Novo Med Spa, we offer three different types of chemical peels, light peels, medium peels, and deep peels. Each is designed to target different skin concerns and improve the complexion. At our office, we offer three different-strength SkinMedica peels. SkinMedica is a popular and effective professional-grade skincare line that creates products for home and professional use that deliver amazing results.

Light Peels

A light peel is ideal for those who have never experienced a chemical peel before, those with sensitive skin, or those who want to improve their skin with no downtime. Light peels can be scheduled monthly to help maintain a youthful glow and improve the skin over time. A light peel works by removing the top layer of skin to brighten and soften the complexion. At our office, we offer SkinMedica’s Illuminize peel, a light peel that helps create a more even complexion color.

The Results

A light peel is suitable for all skin types and typically does not result in any visible peeling. Even those with sensitive skin can benefit from this peel. If you’re looking for a quick way to improve your skin with no downtime, a light peel is a perfect option. It doesn’t require any downtime, but you’ll see some immediate results post-treatment. You can schedule these treatments every two to four weeks to help achieve brighter, glowing skin.

Medium Peels

Medium-depth peels are stronger than light peels, and at our office, we offer SkinMedica’s Vitalize Peel. This peel is intended for patients with deep wrinkles, dark pigmentation issues, and other forms of skin damage. We recommend that patients schedule this peel when they have time to let their skin heal and recover, like over a long weekend. This peel works by smoothing lines and wrinkles and treating other problematic skin concerns.

The Results

You will see some dramatic results after one treatment, but the best results come after completing a series of three to six medium peels with three to four weeks between each. Since this peel contains a higher concentration of ingredients, you may experience some peeling post-treatment. Peeling is a sign that the treatment is working. When your skin peels, it’s just the top layer of your skin shedding, which will eventually reveal a more youthful layer below.

It’s important that you do not pick at your skin or try to speed the healing process along. Doing so could result in an adverse reaction, including scarring or infection. You can expect the entire treatment takes approximately 45 minutes to complete from start to finish. The actual peel portion of the treatment will only take 20 minutes, and then once your appointment is complete, you can resume your normal daily activities.

Deep Peels

When a patient requires a deep peel, we turn to SkinMedica’s Rejuvenize peel, the strongest and most advanced treatment. This peel delivers an aggressive form of exfoliation and is designed to help improve the appearance of those with severely sun-damaged skin, deep acne scars, or other forms of facial scarring. It also helps lighten the darkest of age spots and will help improve the skin on different levels.

The Results

Patients can achieve some dramatic results after one treatment but will experience the most noticeable changes in their skin after undergoing a series of three to six peels with four to six weeks between each.

Since this is the most advanced peel, we must confirm that you are a good candidate for this peel before scheduling a treatment. Different skin types respond differently to peels, so choosing the right peel is a critical part of the process. The right peel will improve your skin rather than harm it.

The Treatment Process

You can expect a chemical peel treatment to be similar to a facial. When you arrive, we will bring you to one of our pristine treatment rooms, where you will lie down on a comfortable treatment bench. Then, your esthetician will clean your skin and apply the right peel for your skin. She will then massage the solution into the skin and allow it to sit on your skin’s surface for a set period of time.

We will take every measure to keep you comfortable during the treatment. We can apply a fan to your skin to help keep it cool during the peel. If you undergo a deep peel, we can apply a topical solution to ensure your comfort throughout the peel. Once the necessary amount of time has passed, the solution will be washed from your face, and your esthetician will then apply a neutralizing solution to ensure that any remaining chemicals are inactive.

The Aftercare

We encourage patients to bring their sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to wear outside after their treatment. Doing so will help protect your skin from the sun’s damaging rays. Once you undergo a chemical peel, your skin will be far more sensitive to the sun than it was pre-treatment. Wearing sunscreen and a hat will help keep your skin protected so you can avoid further skin damage.

Enhancing Your Results

Once you undergo a peel, you must take the necessary steps to protect your skin so that you can achieve the best results possible. Avoiding the sun, investing in high-quality skincare products, and making peels a regular part of your skincare routine will help enhance your results and help you achieve your best skin yet.

Follow the Aftercare Directives

After your peel is complete, your esthetician will provide you with some aftercare directives to ensure that you get the best results possible. It’s important that you follow these instructions carefully and apply sunscreen as directed so that you can avoid sun damage and any other kind of adverse reaction.

Invest in Quality Skincare Products

Peels are designed to remove the top layer of your skin, so it’s important that you apply high-quality products to that new, younger layer to keep it healthy and fresh. Your estheticians can make product recommendations to ensure that you have high-quality products to help enhance your treatment results and improve your complexion from week to week.

Consistency is key with skincare, so as long as you are committed to daily skincare and apply the right products at the right times, you can help maintain the results of your chemical peel long term.

Who Is a Candidate?

The best candidates for this treatment are men and women who want to improve their skin and restore youth to their complexion. You aren’t necessarily excluded from this treatment if you have sensitive skin and may be best suited for the light peel. An initial consultation is the best way to confirm that a chemical peel is right for you. This treatment will help improve the complexion of those who suffer from:
