At Novo Med Spa in Frisco, TX, we understand how significantly the health and laxity of your skin can affect your self-confidence. We believe everyone, regardless of their age, should feel confident in their own skin, so we offer a number of safe, effective skincare treatments. Today, we’re answering some of the most frequently asked questions about Ultherapy, an FDA-approved skin tightening treatment that works thanks to powerful ultrasound technology.
How Long Does Ultherapy Last?
In some cases, the results of Ultherapy only last for a couple of years. However, the younger you are when you get this treatment, the more likely it is that your results will last longer. If you are in your 20s or 30s, you shouldn’t be surprised if your ideal results remain for five years. Note that there are a number of factors that affect the longevity of this treatment’s results.
For example, the healthier your collagen is, the longer your results will last. Therefore, if you eat nutritious foods that contain key ingredients necessary for collagen health, your results will last longer. On the other hand, if you lose a lot of weight very quickly, your skin may struggle to snap back and hug your new contours and you may have sagging skin just a few short years after treatment. For results that last as long as possible, you should:
- Quit smoking
- Minimize alcohol consumption
- Protect against UV damage
- Eat nutritiously
- Stay hydrated
- Exercise regularly
- Don’t lose weight too fast

Am I Too Young To Get This Treatment?
If you’re an adult with concerns about loose skin, you probably aren’t too young to get this safe, effective skin tightening treatment. Most people who get this treatment are in their 40s or 50s because people in their 20s and 30s don’t usually have cosmetic concerns severe enough to warrant professional treatment.
However, there are many reasons why premature skin aging can occur. For example, tobacco and alcohol consumption can cause the skin to wrinkle and sag prematurely. Furthermore, UV damage caused by tanning bed use or sunbathing can destroy collagen health and cause premature skin aging. Also, genetics can cause skin wrinkling and sagging early in life.
Am I Too Old To Get This Treatment?
If you are in relatively good health, you do not have to worry about being too old to get this treatment. It is not uncommon for results to not last as long in the elderly because the skin’s collagen production rate starts to drop significantly year over year starting around the age of 25. By the time people are in their mid-60s or older, they don’t have nearly as much collagen as they did when they were younger.
Furthermore, the effects of environmental toxins, stress, and sun damage has had lots of time to damage the existing collagen. The older you are, the less capable your skin is of keeping its collagen healthy due to decades of damage. However, just because your results may not last as long does not mean that this treatment will not be effective for you.
Am I a Good Candidate for This Treatment?
This non-invasive skin tightening treatment is appropriate for most relatively healthy adults who are concerned about loose or wrinkled skin. However, you need to attend an initial evaluation with skin experts to verify your candidacy. It is necessary to verify that this treatment will be both safe and effective for you. While this treatment is based on the same ultrasound technology used to capture images of pregnancy, it is not recommended for pregnant women.
During your initial consultation, we will discuss your cosmetic concerns to ensure that this treatment will be the most effective way to achieve your cosmetic goals. For example, you may be a better fit for an injectable muscle relaxant if your wrinkles are caused by overactive muscles. Similarly, depending on where your wrinkles are and how severe they are, you may be a better fit for an injectable dermal filler.
How Many Sessions Will I Need To Get My Desired Results?
If your cosmetic concerns are mild or moderate in nature, you should only expect to need one treatment session to achieve your desired results. However, if you have severe skin laxity and deep wrinkles, you may need two treatment sessions. During your initial consultation, we will discuss your goals and evaluate your concerns to determine how many sessions you will need to get the tight, smooth, healthy skin you desire.
How Soon Will I Be Able To See My Desired Results?
People who have received this treatment report that their skin feels tighter immediately after their treatment. However, it can be between four and six months before you see your desired results. That said, it may take up to seven months for you to achieve your desired results if your cosmetic concerns are severe. Typically, follow-up sessions are scheduled three to four weeks after the initial session so progress can be evaluated.
How Long Will My Treatment Session Take?
You can generally expect your Ultherapy session to take between 30 and 90 minutes to complete. Without reviewing your current aesthetic and goals, we can’t give you a very precise idea of what to expect. Generally, if you are only treating one area, like your chest or lower face, your session will only take approximately 30 minutes. On the other hand, if you are treating several large areas, like your whole face, your neck, and your chest, it may take 90 minutes.
What Should I Avoid Before My Treatment Session?
There are a number of things you should avoid in advance of your treatment to prepare for it. For example, it is important that you avoid taking any pharmaceuticals that result in blood-thinning. Also, you should avoid using any potentially irritating hair removal techniques in the treatment area in advance of your session.
To be considered a good candidate for this treatment, your skin must not be irritated at the time of your appointment. Therefore, you should not wax or tweeze any unwanted hairs in the treatment area, and you should not use a depilatory cream. Furthermore, you should not get laser hair removal in your targeted treatment area shortly before your scheduled Ultherapy appointment. Other things to avoid prior to treatment include:
- Direct sun exposure
- Potentially irritating acids
- Retinol use
What Should I Do Before My Treatment Session?
Avoiding sun exposure and the use of any products that can irritate your skin is not sufficient to prepare for this treatment. There are also several things you should do to prepare, such as ensuring you are hydrated when you come in for your appointment. Furthermore, if you have a history of cold sores or other skin irritation in the treatment area, you should take steps to mitigate the risk of such skin irritation at the time of your appointment.
It is also a very good idea to eat a nutritious snack or small meal before you come in for your appointment. Your results are derived from your skin producing extra collagen in response to the treatment, and several nutrients are required for your skin to produce collagen. Furthermore, you should come in for your appointment with your hair away from your face, and your skin should be clean and free from cosmetics.
Will I Need to Take Time Off From Work To Recover From My Treatment?
You may need to take a little time off from work if you have several severe concerns, and you need a 90-minute treatment session. However, once your treatment session is over, we will clean the ultrasound gel off of your treatment areas and review your post-treatment care guidelines with you. Once that is complete, you are free to return to work.
Note, there are several things you will need to avoid after your session. For example, for three to five days, you will need to avoid excessive sweating and heat.
